“Peace begins with me” is a very short mantra meditation that encourages the sentiment that we each are responsible for and capable of bringing peace with us wherever we go. Once we resolve to discover the peace within ourselves, we can extend that peace to the world around us.

Make peace with yourself, and you can retain peace no matter what shows up in your life. Neither the behavior of others nor the tragedies of the world can destroy your inner peace if you live by the mantra, “Peace begins with me.”
When we commit to the beautiful practice of tuning into what’s going on inside that’s disturbing our peace–what we need to release, or detach from, or clear–what’s going on outside cannot harm us.
The technique below, offered by Gabrielle Bernstein, is a fantastic mantra meditation that’s fast, easy, and effective. You can use this wherever you are or whenever you need it to lean into a different perspective, a peaceful and happy place. It’s a reset button that can be activated in the moment before things have a chance to escalate. This tool can bring you away from the frustration, anxiety, or fear before it has a chance to ruin your whole day.

Peace begins with me.
In this meditation, you will use the mantra, “Peace begins with me,” while you use the mudras of placing your thumb toward your pointer finger, your thumb toward your middle finger, your thumb toward your ring finger, and finally your thumb toward your pinky finger. With each word in your mantra, you will gently place your thumb against the respective finger.
Breathe deeply as you say each word…
When you touch your index finger, say: PEACE.
When you touch your middle finger, say: BEGINS.
When you touch your ring finger, say: WITH.
When you touch your pinky finger, say: ME.
Repeat this three times (or more if you need it). Go as slow or as fast as you’d like. The stunning simplicity of the practice can lock you right into a centered place and make you feel better, whether you’re waiting in line at the grocery store or you’re in the middle of an argument with someone.
