The most frightening part of your dreams is the part before you start. You don’t always need to start with big and bold moves, either — in fact, you almost never need to start that way. Read and repeat these New Year affirmations to remind yourself, however many times you need to, that starting small is part of the journey.
Think of something you’d like to accomplish or experience this year. Maybe it has to do with your career, artwork, relationships, home, or health. Don’t think about the final outcome, the finish line, the scariest part of the journey. Think about how that dream feels right now in this moment, in your heart.
Start here with that feeling.
Don’t be surprised if there’s a sprinkling of fear mixed in with your desire. What if there’s an avalanche of fear? That’s okay too. That means you’re human and something matters to you.
When I heard Brendon Burchard say this in one of his podcast episodes, it struck a chord: “You’re not scared to start your dream. You’re embarrassed to be seen starting small.” His words inspired me to write this post.
If something matters to you, you probably feel the fear. There’s the fear of perception to work through: What will other people think of you? How will you be perceived if you put yourself out there and things don’t go quite the way you want them to go?Your vulnerability is #courage. It lights the way. tell a friend
Then there’s the fear of overwhelm: How will you possibly manage to get everything done perfectly? You won’t. How will you become the person you need to be to reach the destination? If you take it one step at a time, with the knowledge and resources you have right now, you will.
Finally, there comes the fear of failure: How do you know which path to choose? What if you’re not good enough? If you seek guidance, ask questions, learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others, reflect often, and lead with curiosity, you will gain clarity and confidence.
With these New Year affirmations, I challenge you (though it’s more of an invitation) to think differently about the process of following your dreams:
- Try visualizing the big picture while leaving ample white space for your dreams to take shape with each step you take. You don’t need to take on all the complexity of the outcome. You’ll learn how to do what you want to do one task, one day, one step at a time.
- Feel the fear. Acknowledge it. Honor it. It means you’re learning, growing, and changing. It’s part of the meaningful work.
- Let the story surrounding your fear unravel. Be curious and open towards it without letting it identify you. Drop the story. Drop into the present moment, into your body and breath, into the desire. Repeat whenever the story comes up.
- Take one small step. Open up to the experience of doing this one thing.
Read these words. Let them sink in. Write them down or print them out. Repeat them often. Use them to reconnect with what matters: the desire.
