Ruminating on negative thoughts, painful memories, and perceived problems can hold us back from living a life that feels truly amazing. It’s really difficult to build a positive life if we continually identify with the negativity we encounter, thinking it’s who we are. A soothing thought it is, then, that you are not the negative thoughts you think.
When I started to understand that I was more than the never-ending thoughts scrolling through my head, life showed me a whole new way to live.
Acknowledge Your Negative Thoughts
I am the witness to the thoughts I think.
Some say to not look at your negative thoughts or pay them any attention. I believe we must pay attention to our internal state of being, regardless of what we end up finding. Self-awareness is always the first step to any sort of transformation.
Of course, we probably don’t want to feed our mind negativity if we can help it, but it’s hardly productive to judge ourselves for thinking negative thoughts. Why judge what’s not the whole truth? Instead, seek to enlighten the darkness by making it conscious. We can't rise above what we're unwilling to meet eye-to-eye. Click To Tweet
Negative thoughts, if we greet them with a little less angst and a little more space, will open our eyes to things we weren’t paying attention to before. That can be a very good thing!
A thought can be changed, after all.
Acknowledge what’s going on inside your head and, if need be, forgive yourself for what you find. Give yourself a break. After all, if you’re willing to genuinely show up for yourself in the first place, you’re already on your way to converting darkness into light, pain into power, chaos into consciousness.
In other words, just look at what is and recognize two things: it’s not the whole truth, but it can be a helpful guide.
Remember Who You Are (Hint: You Are More Than Any Negative Thought Pattern)
I don’t avoid the negative thoughts I think and I don’t dwell in them, either, because I’m so much more than them.
Whatever thought patterns you notice circulating in your system, simply pay attention to them. From this place of honesty and truth, devote your attention and energy to what you would like to make a bigger part of your life.
Once you get to this place of deep knowing that you’re more than any one thought pattern, you get to make a choice: stay with the pattern you’re witnessing, or purposefully step into a different frame of mind (to the best of your ability). If you're the one witnessing the thoughts you're thinking, you're not the thoughts; you're more. You may not be able to leapfrog from depression to joy, or from anger to optimism, because not all higher thoughts are always available to us. You can choose the closest higher thought available to you, and in doing so begin an upward spiral of positive, supportive thinking.
Thoughts are magnetic; they communicate and build off of one another.
As long as thoughts are budding in your brain, and as long as you’re watering them with your attention, you’re going to live with them longer. Your thoughts are powerful, but you’re even more powerful because you are the thinker—you get to decide where you direct your gaze, in any waking (conscious) moment.
From a state of acute awareness and compassion, you are completely capable of dissolving old thought patterns so that something new can emerge.
What Do You Want to Believe Most?
I get to guide the direction of my thinking; eventually, the most nurtured thoughts become my truths.
Negative thoughts don’t stick around because we choose to be negative—certainly not because we want them. Negative thoughts stay with us for one reason: we believe them.
A belief is just a thought pattern that has hardened, its roots securely stretched out in the soil. If a thought can be changed, a belief can evolve, too.You are an alchemist; do not doubt your capacity for transformation. Click To Tweet
What thought patterns have you been (consciously or unconsciously) feeding? Which beliefs are serving your joyful experience of being alive? Which beliefs are not supporting the way you want to feel? Why do you believe in what you believe in; what is the originating thought?
Ask yourself—honestly, patiently, kindly—why you’re experiencing whatever recurring negative thoughts you’d like to change. In every flower, there is a seed; where did the seed come from?
Whatever you find: Witness, forgive, decide what you want to nurture. All is well, because you’re a whole lot more powerful than any belief. You are the believer.
- Which beliefs (thought patterns) would you like to give more space to evolve? If you have one, identify a nearby “higher” thought that you could reach for right now, that feels a just a little bit better.
- Which thoughts would you like to nurture more?
