When you feel like you’re bombarded by things to do, this humble to-do list might just be the reminder you need to choose love today, and every waking day that you have.
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style.” – Dr. Maya Angelou
Every day, we’re faced with many decisions. Ultimately, it all comes down to one fundamental and life-changing decision: do I choose to really love this life that I’ve been given?
Time is a precious, non-renewable resource that we’re only able to tap into right now. The future is, indeed, not guaranteed to any of us. For each of us reading this right now, our time to step off of this train called “Life on Earth” will come, and when that time comes, my hope is that we can do so with a smile in our heart and a knowing that we lived our lives with as much joy, grace, and love as possible.
The life you have left is a gift. Cherish it. Enjoy it now, to the fullest. Capture every moment. Do what matters, now. These are a few important things to do while you’re still living and breathing here on earth.
3 Things to Do While You’re Alive
1. Spend ample time with supportive people.
I wanted to say, “Spend ample time with the right people,” but I’m not sure if there are any right or wrong people, though perhaps they can be right or wrong for us depending on the particular circumstance and time of our lives.
What I mean is this: spend time with people you love, who you care about and who keep you smiling. Spend time with the people who support what matters to you, who lift you up and remind you about your potential and worth when you’ve forgotten. Spend more time with those who help you love yourself, and your life, more.
Don’t get too busy to be with the ones you love.
2. Pursue meaningful goals.
Are there things you’ve been meaning to do, but keep putting off? When it comes down to things to do, please do the important things–the things that make your heart beat, that make you feel happy to be alive, that infuse your life with meaning and purpose. Create new circumstances and carve your own path. Work for what you believe in, and believe in what you do. What matters in life is what matters to you.
If you feel like you’re settling for less than you’re capable of, it’s time to reevaluate. Growth and change can be painful, but nothing is as painful as being stuck where you don’t belong, or regretting what you could have experienced.
3. Prioritize your blessings.
I truly believe (and constantly experience) that life is best lived in gratitude. Today and every day, take at least one moment to breathe in the blessing it is to be alive. Maybe take two moments to really see what’s happening here. Realize how amazing it really is that life exists, and that you’re a part of it. Enjoy what you have, where you are, and who you are.
Rather than collecting excuses and tallying the negatives, count your blessings and look on the bright side. William James once said that “our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” When we train the mind to see the good in everything (which we can do), life becomes good. Our lives become shaped by the thoughts we prioritize, the words we choose, and the actions that stem from our beliefs. And as Oprah Winfrey has said, “Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.”
If you think positive, then any sound becomes music, any movement becomes dance, any smile becomes laughter, mind becomes meditation, and your entire life becomes a celebration.
