When you feel like you’re bombarded by things to do, this humble to-do list might be the reminder you need to choose a loving perspective today and to enjoy the true riches of being alive on earth. It’s all one awesome miracle, and to miss the joy would be to miss it all.
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style.” – Dr. Maya Angelou
Every day, we’re faced with many decisions. Ultimately, it all comes down to one fundamental and life-giving decision: how open am I to living the depth of this moment?
In this world, time is a precious, non-renewable resource, and the funny thing is: we can only tap into it right now.
The future is, indeed, not guaranteed to any of us, not while we’re human beings. For each of us, our time to step off of this train called “Life as a Human on Earth” will come. When that time comes, my hope is that I can do so knowing that I lived every day with as much presence and appreciation as possible.
This is my hope for you.
It doesn’t take any time at all to be present with life as you’re living it, or rather as it’s living through you. What it does is give you linear access to life—depth—so you can honor the surface of all things without getting lost in them.
The life you have left here on this planet, in this body, is a gift. Cherish the joyful parts of the experience and know in every sorrowful experience that this too will pass, as all things of form do. Do what matters, now, because Now is ultimately where everything matters.
Here are a few things to do while you’re still living and breathing here on earth. I’ve found that these three things help me experience the joy of being—true happiness—on a more consistent basis, which I think is an essential element of why we’re here in the first place.
3 Things to Do While You’re Alive in This Body
1. Surround yourself with love.
Spend time with people you love, people who you care about and naturally keep you smiling. Spend time with the people who support what matters to you, who lift you up and remind you about your potential and worth when you’ve forgotten.
Don’t get too busy to be with the ones you love. Our connections are everything.
Be there for someone who’s going through a tough time, and be present with them. In your presence, you bring forth a powerful energy, and others feel it. If you catch yourself formulating a response while someone else is talking, pause and listen just to listen.
Envelop yourself in love—put your love cloak on if you have to enter a negative or unloving situation—and make this how you live in the world. To quote one of my favorite messages from Wayne Dyer: “Loving people live in a loving world. Hostile people live in a hostile world. Same world.”
How you approach every person, situation, event, and circumstance shapes how life on earth feels to you. If you want to feel more of the love, it’s what you need to give and BE.
2. Prioritize joy in what you do.
To live a meaningful life, one of the more urgent things to do is to prioritize joy.
Think about a time when you were in such a deep state of joy, you were happy and content, at peace inside yourself, and felt connected to everything beautiful you’ve ever experienced. It’s likely you were totally absorbed in the present moment.
What were you doing? Was it gardening, playing music, painting, creating something, writing, hiking, playing a sport, cleaning, or taking a few deep breaths? Can you make that thing a bigger part of your life?
Presence, again, is an underlying element here, as it is with love. Being present—no past, no future—brings us into alignment with all of life. We don’t fall below thought, but rise above it. There is joy there. There is flow. You can get into the flow (or into the zone, as it’s sometimes called) engaging in nearly any activity that you enjoy.
Do those things that make joy easier to contact. They’re signals to your soul, letting you know that all is well and life is here for you, right now, living through you, encouraging you to live in joy because it’s your natural state.
When we make joy a consistent conversation, life rejoices with us. Things start to get easier. We feel closer to home.
Plus, the fact that we can bring laughter, lightheartedness, awareness, and simplicity into the things we do is pretty amazing. It’s sort of like a miracle.
3. Generate a grateful state.
I truly believe (and constantly experience) that life is best lived in gratitude.
Today and every day, take a moment to breathe in the blessing it is to be alive. Conscious breathing cannot coexist with thought, so interspersing your days with moments of deep conscious breathing brings a spaciousness to your life experiences. With more space comes a deeper sense that life is a miracle, and you’re part of it.
Gratitude isn’t something that we have or don’t have; it’s something we generate, and not only in response to life, but as a way of approaching life. The more we practice cultivating a grateful state, the more natural that state becomes for us.
I believe that happiness is something we can consciously choose to magnify, and that it’s the human way to tap into the divine energy of joy. Responding to and approaching life with a gratefulness brings us deeper into what we can call presence, which aligns us with that joy, making happiness an easier and easier choice to make.
