“The recovery of the people is tied to the recovery of food, since food itself is medicine: not only for the body, but for the soul, for the spiritual connection to history, ancestors, and the land.” – Winona La Duke
Please note that time-sensitive offers may no longer be available.
For June and July, both new customers and existing Thrive Market members will receive a FREE 6-Pack of Primal Kitchen Dark Chocolate Almond Bars with a purchase of $29 or more. If you’re new to Thrive, you’ll receive a 30-day trial (also free), without obligation.
Though these aren’t the most chocolatey chocolate protein bars I’ve tried (maybe a good thing?) they’re definitely filling; the chewiness of them makes me feel like I’m eating something substantial (and the ingredient list reminds me that I actually am), plus it prevents me from snacking too much.
Note: You need to like chewy treats to like these bars!
These Paleo-friendly bars are healthy, portable snacks that provide ample nutrition, unlike many of the sugary protein bars you’ll find on the shelves in the grocery store. It’s like eating real food in bar-form without worrying about what’s really in the bar you’re eating.
If you’re not familiar with the Paleo diet, this article does a fine job explaining the rules and approved foods that come with this lifestyle. In a nutshell, it’s about returning to “primal eating,” embracing vegetables, meat, fish, and fruit while rejecting dairy, grain, processed foods, and questionable, chemical ingredients.
Why I’m Eating These Paleo Protein Bars
Based on the success of his blog, Mark Sisson wrote the bestselling book, The Primal Blueprint, which was published in 2009, followed by another book, The Primal Blueprint Cookbook in 2010.
Recognizing the need for broader access to healthy food choices, Mark launched Primal Kitchen in 2015 as an offshoot of his bestselling books. The company has received a lot of praise for their Avocado Oil Mayo, and lately they’ve been coming out with protein bars that align with their mission. If we want to flourish, we must learn the art of nourishing ourselves. I really wanted to try these Paleo protein bars because they contain:
- Turkish almonds and roasted pumpkin seeds enrobed in a chewy, dark chocolate, caramel coating
- Only 3 grams of sugar (from honey) and 8 grams of net carbs
- 15 grams of protein
- 170 milligrams of potassium
- 6 grams of fiber
- No gluten, grain, dairy and soy
- More (grass-fed) collagen than a cup of bone broth (so amazing for your bones, tendons, ligaments, connective tissues, skin, and overall health)
Here’s the full ingredient list (straight from the back of the box):
Almonds, Pumpkin Seeds, Grass Fed Hydrolyzed Collagen, Isomalto-oligosaccharide (Prebiotic Fiber From Cassava Root), Coconut Flakes, Honey, Natural Flavors, Water, Coconut Oil, Bitter Chocolate, Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Nibs, Himalayan Pink Salt, Monk Fruit Extract, Tocopherols, Cashews.
I’m thinking along the lines of how Thrive describes these bars: “destined to become a pre- or post-workout classic.”
If you’re not a Thrive Market member yet, I share here why I’m such a big fan of what they do.
