You are more than a body, and for that reason alone you can learn to love your body and respect its purpose in helping you bring light into this world.
“Health is the result of relinquishing all attempts to use the body lovelessly.” – A Course in Miracles
Forgive Yourself First
I am willing to forgive myself for any attempts to treat or use my body lovelessly.
To be on the same team as your body, the first step is always forgiveness for ever parting ways.
- We can forgive ourselves for ever blaming our bodies for the things we cannot do.
- We can forgive ourselves for putting ourselves down because of how we look.
- We can forgive ourselves for thinking our bodies should move more swiftly and gracefully, with less pain and greater ease.
- We can forgive ourselves for neglecting to see our bodies with love.
We cannot shame our bodies into beauty. We cannot approach our bodies with resent and expect them to respond lovingly. Hating your body will never get you as far as loving it will, because your body is responding to you. Your body is the ship and you are the captain, not the other way around.
Our approach matters, and we’re blessed enough to be able to adjust our attitude at any time.
When you forgive yourself for any shameful, hateful, limiting, negative thoughts you’ve ever directed toward your body, you set yourself free to love your body and your life. All that’s required of you is a soft heart and an open mind: the ingredients that yield a change in perspective.
Be Willing to Learn to Love Your Body
I am learning to accept, love, and appreciate my body for all the life it has allowed me to live.
Affirming your willingness to love your physical presence can help you let go of any ideals and judgments that may have shrouded the fact that your body is a gift, and that life is not a guarantee. Your body allows you limitless opportunities to experience yourself in each moment.
Let us be grateful for the life we have while we’re living it.
We can show our gratitude by showing up for ourselves with one act of self-care each day. Or we can consciously speak to our bodies like we would to our friends. Fueling our movements with meaningful action is another way we can bring joy into each step.
Your body is one of the most amazing gifts you will ever own for the entirety of your human life. It’s your assignment to treat it as such so that you can be of greater service to a higher good.
How you feel about yourself is more important than how you look, and how wonderful it is that none of us need wait a single moment before we decide to choose differently: a more loving perception of ourselves, a healthier attitude, a better way to live and enjoy life.
As William James, leading 19th century psychologist and philosopher, once said: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.” I certainly believe this may be one of the greatest discoveries of any generation. Our ability to change our lives by changing our perception is the stuff of miracles.
Beauty Is a Light in the Heart
My happiness is not dependent on my appearance.
Value the function of your body more than you do its appearance. If you can do this, your presence takes on the power of love–you’ll be better able to be the love that the world needs. Recognize your body’s function as a light in the world.
Respecting your body means that you understand you’re more than a body. You are the one witnessing your physical presence in this human lifetime, and your body is responding to your every thought and attitude. You can either make your body a messenger of love or pain, of light or suffering; the message is up to you.
Let your body be a conduit for love and a catalyst for joy. You don’t need to have the “perfect body,” if there ever was one, to be happy. Perfection is only perception. Happiness is a state of mind that we can adopt in order to heal our physical lives and to know the peace that comes from unconditional love.
You can choose to be happy right here, right now, just as you are. There actually is no other way.
- How can you love your body a little bit better today?
- What positive practices help you heal, grow, and feel good?
- Are you willing to see your body as a vehicle of love and a way to spread light?
