Happiness is a practice that requires our loving devotion. If you want to know how to be happy, you must know patience and persistence. You must understand how to enjoy the journey without getting lost in the glamour of the end result.
“Happiness, not in another place, but this place… not for another hour, but this hour.” – Walt Whitman
Happiness Lives Inside
So many people are starving for happiness, yet happiness is a state of being, meaning that it already lives in each one of us. Though it can become covered up by conflicting views and ways of the world, our joy cannot be lost, really, and it certainly cannot be lost forever.
When we’re deeply happy in the present moment, we’re connected to the source from which we came, to the life essence of who we really are.“Joy is not in things; it is in us.” – Richard Wagner Click To Tweet
Joy is always with us, but we must learn to crack ourselves open and remember that peace is our natural resting state. We can get back to ourselves by consciously and purposefully putting ourselves in good-feeling states.
Practicing happiness daily allows us to eventually relax into a deeper, truer space that lives within. Essentially, we are looking within for what we wish to see in the world.
Happiness Is a Practice
You probably already know that enduring happiness doesn’t just happen effortlessly overnight. Happiness is a practice that requires us to show up every day with a grateful heart. It’s called practice because we’ve got to put in the work whether we’re excited or exhausted—we must be relentlessly willing to prioritize joy.“Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” – Ben Sweetland Click To Tweet
When you start to prioritize things like gratitude and acceptance, life opens up to you. Practice mindfulness and presence, and life becomes easier. See that happiness is a practice and not a place, and you amplify the love that’s present in any given moment.
Lay a Foundation for Happiness
Let’s make joy a disciplined practice in our lives, by prioritizing yet not strictly pursuing it. Let’s set things up so that we can experience joy every day, in big and small ways, in mundane or magical moments. Let’s become committed to bringing the joy with us on this journey, enjoying the ride no matter how bumpy it gets and no matter where it leads.
Believe in the possibility of your happiness in any given moment. Keep practicing what matters to you. Use your signature strengths to bring more meaning into your life instead of waiting for it to appear. Most importantly, never give up when things get difficult.
Remember: the light of happiness may flicker from time to time, but it can never be put out.
Happiness is more about where we’re aiming from than it is about what we’re aiming for. The foundation for your happiness lies in this waking moment, within the light of your soul. Start here, always here.
- How will you practice being happy today?
- In what ways can you spread the light, kindness, compassion, and spirit of forgiveness into your world?
- Are you willing to prioritize happiness over lesser goals that don’t offer any lasting intrinsic rewards?
