Here’s a delicious take on the activated charcoal lemonade recipes I’ve seen floating around on Pinterest lately. Detox drinks have never spoken to me, and they still don’t. Activated charcoal is, however, something that has truly made a positive difference in my health over the past months, and I’m really enjoying this crazy-looking drink.

I’m a relatively new (but avid) fan of activated charcoal and collagen powder, as each have become part of my healthy feeling-good regimen. Hence my interest in this unique spin on a classic warm-weather drink.
Activated charcoal is touted for its detoxifying power due to its absorption qualities. You can use it in powder form to whiten teeth and lift surface stains or take it in capsule form to ease stomach discomfort and reduce bloating caused by gas produced from a meal.
Collagen keeps joints flexible and skin supple, and helps maintain healthy hair, nails, connective tissues, bones, and overall health. Since collagen decreases in the body with age, it’s important to replenish with collagen-rich foods or supplements.
The original activated charcoal lemonade recipe, courtesy of Thrive Market (where I get tons of healthy products cheaper than most places), features Great Lakes Gelatin’s Collagen Hydrolysate powder; I used Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (because I already use and love this brand).
The activated charcoal ice cubes create a really cool, swirling effect when mixed with the bright, freshly-squeezed lemonade. If you need a little digestive support or feel like you could use a light detox, give activated charcoal lemonade a try!
One side note before you begin: Activated charcoal temporarily stains just about everything. Use caution while making the ice cubes, and wear clothes/use kitchenware you don’t mind being stained (even if it’s temporary). You will get charcoal on your hands, but it will come out with some soap, water, and scrubbing.
An Easy Activated Charcoal Lemonade with Collagen Recipe
Yield: 10 to 12 servings
Active Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 12 hours (freezing time included)
For the activated charcoal ice cubes
2 cups water
For the collagen lemonade
5 tablespoons Vital Proteins Grass-Fed Collagen Peptides
1 cup hot water
6 cups cold water
2 cups fresh lemon juice
2 to 3 lemons, sliced
Make the activated charcoal ice cubes
Break charcoal capsules by cutting with scissors (or scoop from the bag) to add the charcoal powder to a large container. Add the water. Stir until blended. Pour the liquid into ice cube molds. Freeze for 8 hours or overnight.
Make the collagen lemonade
In large pitcher, add honey, collagen powder, and hot water; stir until honey dissolves. Add lemon juice and cold water; stir until well mixed. Fill a glass with activated charcoal ice cubes and pour lemonade over the ice. Garnish with lemon slice.
