You’re here for a reason and a purpose and you’re worthy of experiencing happiness on a regular basis. This post shares a five-step process to bring more joy into your daily experiences by aligning with your life purpose. There is no other place, no other time to be happier than this place and this time.
“Every single person on the planet has a very unique and very specific life purpose, and the main way to really be happy and fulfilled is to align yourself with that purpose.” – Suzanne Adams
Suzanne Adams is a motivational speaker, life purpose consultant, and author who I became familiar with during the Hay House World Summit. In her audio lesson, she spoke about the importance of having a life purpose, learning to love yourself, flipping negativity into positivity, connecting with a greater power, and surrendering. In order to be happier human beings, in her eyes, these are essential steps we can take.
Change is a process, and when you understand and can take into your life some simple steps of that process, you can live the life you love. Here are five ways to be happier right now, courtesy of Suzanne, so that you can start to create a life you’re excited to live.
Ways to Be Happier in this Moment
1. Understand that every single person on this planet has a specific purpose.
If we are to be happier, we must align ourselves with that purpose, whatever it may be. Suzanne believes we come here with a life purpose, and it evolves and expands and grows as you evolve, expand, and grow. We can realign ourselves with our newest version of our purpose as life unfolds.
To help you gain clarity with what your purpose is, ask yourself these six questions:
- What would I be doing if I were not at all limited? If I feel limited, what’s limiting me?
- What are my passions?
- What brings me joy?
- What comes naturally and easily to me?
- When am I my happiest?
- What would I be doing if money was no object?
We might have quick surface answers for these questions. Give yourself time and space to answer them. Commit to a 30 day practice of sitting with these questions every morning, even. Work it into your meditation, sit in stillness just listening for five minutes, then write the questions in a journal and answer them every day. The discoveries you can make by peeling back the layers of your life and letting the truth come through are amazing.
The ultimate goal doesn’t have to be living your life purpose in your career and making money doing it. You can start to bring the happiness, be the light, see the best in what you’re doing, be grateful for what you have in front of you, be authentic—before you know it, your life will start to align with something that has to do with your purpose. Things will move.
2. Learn to love yourself.
Loving yourself is knowing you’re worthy of your heart’s desires, and knowing you wouldn’t have a dream if you weren’t meant to fulfill it.
If you feel like you’re in a flow, you know you’re in alignment with self-love. If something doesn’t feel right, take inventory. You also call in and attract people that treat you like you treat yourself. So you can gauge your experience of self-love by the quality of the relationships around you.
Suzanne suggests writing yourself love notes and leaving them around the house where you’ll see them. Or writing yourself a letter about why you love yourself and why you think you’re worthy of your heart’s desires. It may sound silly, but when you actually do it, it has a powerful potential to uplift. You’re cultivating the energy you want to be living in, and thus attracting more of that into your life. It’s the little things we do that cultivate the changes we want to experience.
And if you find yourself in an environment you don’t want to be in, it doesn’t mean you’re bad or unworthy. It’s simply the wake-up call you need to awaken to your authenticity. It’s a lesson.
3. Flip negativity to positivity.
Thoughts become things. You have the power to shift anything in life simply by shifting your perception. The way out of a bad situation is to find the silver lining, to flip the negative energy to gratitude, to quit focusing on the bad and focus on what you do want, and on what you can do.
By choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude, you are actively carving a different path for yourself. To be happier right here, even if right here isn’t ideal, acknowledge what you have and dwell in gratefulness for the good in your life.
Another way to be happier by flipping your energy is to really feel with your every being that your dreams are already your reality, and then they really can be. By living in that energy right now and focusing on what you want, you’re calling in more of it.
If you’re hesitant to try this for fear of disappointment, shift your mindset. If you get disappointed, you must see and understand and trust that there is a silver lining, and that there is a bigger design plan. You are a piece of the puzzle and things will fall into place for you if you keep at it, even though it may not happen at the timing you wanted it to happen. The universe has your back. Something better is on the way for you. Just because something is delayed doesn’t mean it’s not coming.
4. Connect to a power that’s greater than you and allow yourself to be guided.
As A Course in Miracles states, “If you knew who walks beside you on this path that you have chosen, fear would be impossible.” Whatever your beliefs, it’s amazing to think that we all serve as a vessel to be a messenger somehow. There’s so much power that surrounds us and wants to help us. There’s a message to be heard if we learn to listen.
Suzanne offers these four tips for opening up to the intelligent guidance of something greater than you:
- Keep your channels clean through meditation, prayer, and healthy eating.
- Be open minded.
- Practice free writing, where you can sit in stillness first and then just start writing (or typing) with no goals, no attachment, no method. You’re just writing to see where it goes. It can be a very healing and revealing process.
- Do something that’s joyful.
The last step in this process is to get out of your own way. Suzanne calls this, “holding on loosely.” The way of living a life of happiness and joy entails understanding that you can have all these wonderful ideas, but the universe might have something better in store for you. Trusting the process is the other side of doing and achieving.
What is coming is coming, but a lot of times before it gets here, you’re going to think it’s not coming. You limit yourself to something better if you don’t invite life to happen for you instead of always needing to make it happen. Learning to let go and surrender is a way to be happier by allowing the journey to unfold without resistance.
Allow yourself to enjoy the journey by allowing yourself to be guided (see step #4). Ask for help. Surrendering does not mean giving up on your journey, but it does mean to stop fighting with it. Here’s Suzanne’s beautiful prayer for surrender:
Please help me to get out of my own way.
Please help me to hear your divine guidance.
Please help me to trust and know I’m on the right path.
Please help me to surrender.
Even the most spiritual person in the world won’t have all of these steps down all of the time. You will falter and fumble, as we all do. Stay aware and understand that you hold the power within to make these changes, and to be happier than you once were. If you can commit to any of these practices, you can stay on track.
