Surely to no surprise, this post was inspired by my newfound love for daily walks in nature. Movement is such an integral part of our physical happiness, and taking that movement outside can bring so much peace and joy. While there are many wonderful benefits of walking outside, these are simply a few of my favorites so far.
“Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Going outside provides us the precious opportunity to look within. We’re planted in the setting where we can realign with our own true nature. Wonder is placed back in our vision. Beauty knocks on our door. Life’s smallest details invite us to investigate their existence and to contemplate our own journey.“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” – Vincent van Gogh Click To Tweet
I hope this short post gives you a little boost of inspiration to, as Henry David Thoreau once put it, “Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.”
A Few Happy Benefits of Walking Outside
Going for a walk and getting out into the world is a chance to smile at strangers and forge a wordless bond with someone you otherwise may never have come into contact with. For sometimes, our smile is the source of our happiness, and it may be the inspiration someone else needs to smile today.
A simple walk in nature is a chance to deepen our connections with others, because perhaps they’re not strangers at all, just friends we’ve yet to meet here. It’s also a chance to deepen your connection with yourself.“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” – John Muir Click To Tweet
One of the most profound benefits of walking outside, especially in a natural setting, is stress relief. Going outside is so good for our peace of mind. It’s a well-needed respite from the stressful situation, the intensity of our emotions, an argument, a long work day, and idleness.
An active body calms the mind. A change of scenery offers a fresh outlook and a chance to choose peace instead of stress. As John Burroughs said, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.” – Henry David Thoreau Click To Tweet
Our creativity is fueled with each step we take. When we take a break from sitting, from staying inside, and from looking at technology, we can gain new clarity and insights. We widen our view of the world every time we look in wonder at nature’s patient creations.
We become inspired and enlightened when we walk into the brightness of the outdoors, and even when the sun is shining behind the clouds do we reap the benefits of walking outside.
Our ability to create effortlessly and generously is enhanced by the time we spend outdoors.“All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” – Friedrich Nietzsche Click To Tweet
