The world is as we are, and as we see. When we consciously choose to think positive, prioritize peace in our hearts, and amplify the goodness in the world, our world becomes a positive, peaceful, and joyful place. May these laws of happiness inspire you to see with this vision of love.
“We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.” – Anais Nin
This is a three-part series on living a happier life. Be sure to read Part 1 which covers the first seven laws of happiness:
- Happiness is a state of mind.
- Being is as important as doing.
- Integrity is important.
- Giving is receiving.
- Negative thoughts are only persuasive if you allow them to be.
- You don’t change who you are; you grow into who you really are.
- Be flexible so that you don’t break.
Then read Part 2 which covers the next seven laws:
- Face your fears.
- Forgiveness gives.
- Gratitude is King.
- Dwell in the present moment.
- Seek inspiration.
- Accept all that is.
- Mistakes are for learning.
While reading these “final” seven laws of happiness, remember that there is no “final” destination or perfect recipe for joy; this is a journey and a direction that’s ever-responsive to your life. You are on a self-awakening journey that’s uniquely your own, and this is merely a guide to help you rekindle your light and your vision.
21 Laws of Happiness: #15-21
15. The world is your mirror.
To quote the sacred ancient text known as The Bhagavad Gita: “If you see the soul in every living being, you see truly. If you see immortality in the heart of every mortal being, you see truly.”
We see the world not as it is, but as we are. We cannot always alter our experiences, but we can control how we experience our experiences.
Life as we know it really is all about perspective. If we change how we see other people, the people we see change. If we change how we think of events, our experiences change. We can both be looking at the same thing and see something totally different.
It is up to each of us to decide, each moment, how we want to live.Happiness lies in our relentless willingness to see with love, over and over again. Click To Tweet
What do you want to see in the world? Do you want to see only what’s on the surface, or do you want to see the depth of the soul?
16. Compare not.
Happiness does not come by seeking validation from others. It does not come by comparison or belittlement or judgment. Your victories are not won on someone else’s battlefield. Do not let outside influences dictate your inner worth.
As Theodore Roosevelt once wisely stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” How true. How happy we can be when we accept the person we are. Acceptance does not mean that we cannot strive to improve certain aspects of who we are, but acceptance is the springboard that makes real positive growth possible.
Do not wish to be anyone other than who you are. You are amazing. You are enough. You do not need to succumb to the illusion of normal; there is no such thing as normal.
Read this affirmation for believing in yourself by looking within yourself.
“Normal is an illusion,” as Morticia Addams would tell you. “What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.”
17. Self-care is not selfish.
Here’s the thing: we can love others if we don’t love ourselves completely. I’m also a firm believer that if we focus on loving ourselves more completely, we can better extend genuine, unconditional love to those around us.
Self-care is NOT selfish. Taking care of yourself is not a luxury or anything to feel guilty about. Loving yourself is part of your happiness. It’s a step on your path of self-awareness and personal growth. Self-care is like laying a solid foundation of love within yourself so that you can build strong walls of love around you.Self-love rejuvenates the soul and amplifies the happiness of all. Love is always flowing back and forth, all around and within. When you give love to yourself, you are in essence tapping into an infinite well of love that’s ever present.
When you choose to love yourself, you’re choosing to be more loving in general, and this love cannot help but spill over into all aspects of your life. You end up being more loving with others, too. Love goes both ways.
One of the best gifts you can give to another is to love and care for yourself.
18. Your experiences are your teachers.
The happiest people find meaning in every moment, which is something I’ve written about in this post about happy people.
As the saying (commonly attributed to the Buddha) goes, “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” If we can uncover the hidden meaning in an uncomfortable circumstance or a negative experience, we can transform our suffering into something worthwhile. In doing so, we actually take back the power we’ve given to our pain. The purpose of the human life is to live a life of purpose. Click To Tweet
Life can be a continuous string of meaningful moments when we see the universe as a classroom, people as our assignments, and experiences as our teachers. Holding this sight creates miracles in otherwise mundane moments, brings peace to the forefront, and lifts us up on the wings of faith.
19. Treasure each step.
As we’ve already learned, happiness is not a road trip or a vacation, but an internal journey. Cherish each step on this path. Embrace whatever comes your way, as if there was no other way. Happiness is the way; it’s how you carry yourself and how you pick yourself up again.Happiness is a journey of yourself, through yourself, to yourself. Click To Tweet
Make mistakes—remember, they’re teachers—and don’t beat yourself up about them. What’s perceived as good and bad is all part of your growth, pushing you forward along the path of awakening to your highest, truest self. When mistakes are made, you have a choice to make…
Will you quit, or will you forgive yourself and try again?
20. You are responsible for bringing the joy.
There is a high importance of bringing the joy into your life, and into every situation and scenario.
Wherever you go, make a commitment to bring the joy into that place. Do not walk into a situation expecting boredom or negativity. Be a beacon of light in the room. Bring the positive energy to the party. Consciously choose to shine your happiness outward, and you will realize that it was within you the whole time.
Happiness never strays too far. It is always within reach (even when it doesn’t feel like it is). Hoping for happiness in the future guarantees that it is always just out of reach, but seeking to remember it here brings the gift of joy to our doorstep.Happiness is summoned from within, right here in this place, right now in this moment. Even when it’s difficult to smile, it’s possible. Do not wait for something to give you a reason to smile. Smile, and make the world wonder.
21. Love is everything.
Just as we must consciously bring the joy, we must remember again and again that we are responsible for bringing the love.
Do not wait for others to love you. Do not wait for life to love you. Love first. Love always. Be more loving in your day-to-day interactions, and life will love you back. Everything we put out into the world comes back to us, always and without exception.
Choosing love on a daily basis means that we must value peace more than we value being right. We must value friendship more than we value separation. Sometimes, for the sake of our own peace and happiness, we must choose to see how we are more alike than we are unalike.Everything you want to have or experience in life depends on how willing you are to give it. Realize that everything you see is either a sign of love or a call for love. Believe in your own power to love above all else, above all fear and disagreement and judgment. You’re strong enough to be kind to someone who is not. You’re brave enough to choose love in an unloving situation.
You are the light, and you are the love.
- How will you choose to see the world?
- Are you willing to see with love and bring the joy to the forefront?
- What have your experiences taught you about happiness, peace, harmony, and this journey?
